Part of what makes stone floors and countertops beautiful is their natural appearance, so why do I need to seal them?
It’s true that the allure of stone surfaces like sandstone, travertine and marble comes from their earthy, fibrous texture and subtle color and shade differences. The main reason to seal them is to protect them from spills and the effects of everyday use and keep them looking beautiful.
While sealers do not make your floors and countertops waterproof, they do fill the microscopic pores and reduce the rate at which water and other substances are absorbed, thus prolonging the life of your stone surfaces.
How do I know if my floors/countertops need sealing?
If you’ve invested in quality stone countertops or floors, you want to keep them looking great. Chances are, they may have been sealed at installation or before, depending on the company. If you’re not sure, however, you can do a couple of simple tests to determine if sealing (or resealing) is needed.
Choose an inconspicuous area of the stone, such as in a corner or under an appliance. Pour a small amount of water (a few drops) on the stone, and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. Perform the same test with a drop of oil. If either test leaves a discolored spot on the stone, you’ll want to proceed with resealing.
Can I seal my own countertops and floors?
While it’s tempting to try to save money by doing the job yourself, it’s not as easy as it looks, and it’s much more difficult (and expensive) to repair and restore a sealing job gone awry. Since 2004, Bizaillion has been treating and restoring stone flooring and countertops. We use a diamond honing process to polish your surfaces to their original shine, and the products we use for sealing are top of the line, commercial grade sealants.
Some sealers are better at absorbing into dense stone countertops, while some are better at sealing stones like slate, limestone or concrete. Trust a professional like Bizaillion to recommend the right sealer for your stone countertop or floor.
