Travertine is a wonderful natural stone that comes in many variations. At Bizaillion Stone Floor Restoration, we love this popular stone for floors and showers. But there are some things you should know about travertine if you have this type of surface in your home or if you’re thinking about putting some in.
Ten Fast Facts About Travertine
- Travertine is a type of natural limestone. Limestone is formed by mineral deposits from natural springs. This accounts for the subtle earth-tone palette that characterizes travertine tiles.
- Travertine comes from all around the world. Most is imported to the United States from quarries in Italy, Iran, Mexico, Turkey and Peru.
- Travertine has been used in many ancient buildings all over the world. It was a popular building material in Italy during the Roman Empire.
- Travertine is porous. For this reason, you have to seal it if using it as a flooring surface.
- Travertine tile has many naturally occurring holes and troughs. Again, since it is a type of natural limestone, it makes sense that it would have some naturally occurring variations. Be sure you like this look before choosing travertine.
- Those holes and troughs can be filled or left unfilled. In many cases, the manufacturing location fills the surface during production.
- Travertine comes in many finishes, including honed, tumbled, polished and brushed. Honed is probably the most popular style and has a matte finish.
- Travertine comes in many natural colors in the white, tan, cream, brown and gold families. Depending on the source of the mineral deposits, some has a pink or red tone. Looking for something dramatic like blue or purple? Travertine is not your stone!
- Travertine is a great flooring choice in both indoor and outdoor settings. We’ve also often seen it used as a decorative piece mixed with granite, marble, ceramic or even porcelain tile.
- Travertine tile can last for decades, but the initial investment is often higher than other types of materials. This heavy stone requires trained professionals to install and restore.
A Cleaning and Restoration a Bizaillion Times Better
The best way to protect and keep your travertine floors looking amazing is professional cleaning and restoration by Bizaillion Stone Floor Restoration. Why? We used a diamond honing and polishing process that is unlike any cleaning you could do on your own.
Diamond honing is a wet sanding process that removes a very thin layer of the stone. Natural stone mined from the earth is put through an initial diamond honing process to create a flat and polished look. Over time, the stone will wear down, much like wood floors. We then repeat the honing process to restore shine and remove any light scratches.
Polishing is the final step in your floor’s restoration journey. This is done after diamond honing, as this produces the best (and most beautiful!) results. We use a form of polishing called crystallizing. Crystallizing is a great option as the last step in polishing a floor because most floors will only require crystallizing two to three times during the duration a homeowner lives in a house. Crystallizing takes a lot of experience and understanding to become proficient. At Bizaillion, we know how to use these polishes to strengthen, expand the life of a floor and protect it from losing its luster.
