Your Stone Care Guide
Many customers ask us about how to clean and maintain their beautiful floors and counters. Here is a simple guide with general care tips.
Floor Tips
clean wisely: use a 2-step approach
STEP ONE – Spot Cleaning: It’s important to clean up spills quickly to prevent stains from forming. We recommend DryTreat botanical Countertop Cleaner. Although primarily made for counters, this works great on floor spills as well.
STEP TWO – Routine Cleaning: We recommend DryTreat Daily Floor Cleaner for routine mopping and floor cleaning.
- Standard Use: Mix 1 ounce of cleaner per 2 gallons of water.
- Heavy Duty: Add one to three ounces additional cleaner to the water for deep cleaning, then rinse the surface with fresh water to remove any residue.
Important Warnings:
To protect your natural stone, please avoid the following:
- Acidic Cleaners: Vinegar and common bathroom cleaners contain acids that can etch and damage stone surfaces.
- Fragrances: Products like Fabuloso or Pine-Sol leave films that build up over time, dulling the stone’s appearance.
cleaning tips
- Use Minimal, pH-Neutral Cleaner: Cleaners are designed to attract dirt, so a film left on the floors will cause them to become dirty faster. We recommend spot cleaning and routine cleaning with just water or a very small amount of cleaner. Always use cleaners that are pH-neutral.
- Maintain Clean Mop Water: Change your mop water frequently. For large flooring areas, refresh the water every 200 square feet; for houses, use fresh water for each room to ensure you are not just spreading dirt.
- Avoid Wax and Polish Cleaners: Do not use cleaners that promise a “shiny finish” or have “Polish” on the label, as these often contain wax or alternative chemicals that leave a film.
Select the Best Mop:
- Traditional string cotton mops are more difficult to maneuver but do a better jobcleaning tile and grout.
- Swiffer-type and microfiber flat mops are great for sweeping and cleaning the surface but tend to push dirt into the grout lines.
Shower Tips
stone shower maintenance
- Squeegee and Towel Dry: Squeegee or towel dry all stone walls and vertical surfaces after use. This is crucial, because when water dries, minerals and soap deposits attach to and build up on the stone.
- Ensure Proper Ventilation: Always vent your shower after use. Mold and mildew thrive when surfaces do not dry completely between uses.
- Routine Cleaning: Use DryTreat Botanical Countertop Cleaner to routinely clean the walls. Regular cleaning easily removes mineral and soap build-up before it hardens on the stone surface.
- Structural Check: Inspect wall-to-wall and wall-to-floor joints for cracks or holes. Settling can cause joints to crack, creating pockets where water collects and can lead to mold and mildew over time.
- Avoid Metal Products: Do not use beauty products or decorative dishes made with metal. Shaving cream cans are the most common cause of rust stains in stone showers.
- Limit Acidic Products: Avoid or limit the use of acidic shampoos and other beauty products. Many organic shampoos have a high concentration of acidic ingredients. If using these products, we strongly recommend placing them on a shower-safe decorative dish
